SM2524XT PCIe Gen5 DRAMless SSD Controller Targets AI PC Storage Demands

SM2524XT PCIe Gen5 DRAMless SSD Controller has been launched by Silicon Motion to support AI PCs, local inference, and KV Cache-heavy workloads.

Silicon Motion Technology Corporation has introduced the SM2524XT, a next-generation SSD controller designed for AI-focused client storage. Moreover, the controller targets demanding random read and write activity linked to on-device AI models.

The new controller uses a four-core processor architecture. It also supports PCIe Gen5 x4 and NAND interface speeds of up to 4,800 MT/s. As a result, it can deliver sequential read speeds of up to 14 GB/s.

SM2524XT PCIe Gen5 DRAMless SSD Controller improves random performance

The controller delivers random performance of up to 2.5 million IOPS. Therefore, Silicon Motion positions it as a strong option for AI inference and KV Cache workloads.

Built on TSMC’s 6nm process, the SM2524XT also improves performance per watt by up to 25% versus the prior generation. In addition, Silicon Motion says random performance rises by up to 25%.

This matters because AI PCs increasingly process fragmented data locally. Consequently, storage controllers must sustain low latency during intensive inference sessions.

Designed for KV Cache and on-device AI

KV Cache can create significant storage pressure during local AI inference. However, conventional SSD workloads do not always reflect these access patterns.

The SM2524XT addresses this issue through sustained random I/O throughput, latency stability, and improved power efficiency. Therefore, it supports more responsive AI PC performance under continuous load.

Silicon Motion has also integrated Separated Command Address technology, advanced FTL scheduling, and NANDXtend LDPC ECC. Together, these technologies improve parallel processing, reduce latency disruption, and support consistent workload handling.

Strategic relevance for AI PCs

AI PCs are moving more inference workloads onto local devices. As a result, SSD controllers now play a larger role in user experience and system responsiveness.

The SM2524XT gives OEMs and SSD manufacturers a controller platform suited to next-generation AI storage architectures. Moreover, its DRAMless design may support efficient, compact, and cost-conscious SSD development.

Silicon Motion said the controller is purpose-built for AI inference, Local Agent workloads, and on-device large language model applications.
