Luminar Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: LAZR), a global pioneer in automotive safety and autonomy solutions, has confirmed that Paul Ricci appointed CEO will take effect on or around 21 May 2025. Ricci, the former long-serving Chairman and CEO of Nuance Communications, steps into the leadership role following the departure of company founder Austin Russell.
Leadership Change Following Governance Review
The leadership reshuffle comes as a result of a recent ethics-related review. The Board’s Audit Committee conducted an inquiry into Russell’s conduct under the company’s Code of Business Conduct and Ethics. While the findings led to Russell’s immediate resignation as both CEO and Chair of the Board, Luminar has clarified that this internal matter will not affect its financial performance or reported results.
Although stepping down from executive responsibilities, Russell will remain a member of the Board of Directors. He is expected to support Ricci through the leadership transition, particularly in matters concerning proprietary technology and long-term strategic vision.

Board member Matt Simoncini voiced strong support for Ricci’s appointment, highlighting his proven track record in scaling high-technology businesses. “Paul is a visionary leader with deep operational expertise and an exceptional understanding of emerging technologies,” said Simoncini. “His appointment is a strategic move that positions Luminar for sustained growth and innovation.”
Ricci’s tenure at Nuance was transformative. Over nearly two decades, he evolved the company from a niche imaging software business into a $2 billion global leader in conversational AI and automotive software. His leadership was instrumental in expanding Nuance’s footprint in healthcare and customer service automation, as well as in developing one of the largest independent automotive software portfolios globally.
Bringing Strategic Insight and Operational Rigor
In his first statement as incoming CEO, Ricci underscored his commitment to Luminar’s mission. “I step into this role with a deep respect for the innovation already achieved, and a strong conviction in the company’s future potential,” Ricci stated. “Luminar’s technology has the power to significantly enhance vehicle safety and ultimately save lives. I am inspired to lead this mission forward.”
Ricci’s more recent roles include serving as CEO of behavioural health tech firm Qualifacts from 2020 to 2023, and providing strategic advice to Lightspeed Venture Partners and Warburg Pincus. He also held directorships at companies operating in digital health and AI, including Personalis and Intelligent Medical Objects.
Earlier in his career, Ricci held senior leadership positions at Xerox Corporation and began his professional journey at its Palo Alto Research Center. He holds both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in economics from Stanford University, reinforcing his strategic and analytical leadership style.
